Monkeys, like slow lorises, are familiar visitors to local zoos. While roughly 4,500 monkeys are kept as pets in the United Kingdom, it is still banned in the United States.
Many states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Wyoming, have particular bans against keeping monkeys as pets due to their popularity. Furthermore, animal rights advocates continue to try to enact prohibitions in the few states that do not have specific laws against the keeping of monkeys as pets.
