Even though he despised The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sean Connery did not retire from acting owing to it. Instead, it was a matter of timing. Connery reportedly assured his buddy and fellow actor Michael Caine that he would never shoot another film after 2003.
Caine went on to say that his friend left the movie industry because he didn’t want to play minor parts about older men, and they weren’t providing him with youthful romantic lead roles. The last bit is, of course, Caine’s dry, tongue-in-cheek humor, but he does touch on some reality.
Connery was reduced to primarily smaller jobs after decades as a leading man, which couldn’t have been easy to take. As a result, he decided to retire.
